My commentary on the Army-Navy Game: Tradition, Competition, and Unity.
As a proud graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1979, and as someone who has had the privilege to serve my nation as President, I hold the Army-Navy Game close to my heart.
Today marks the 125th edition of this storied rivalry, a tradition that transcends the field of play and embodies the values of honor, discipline, and service.
This game is more than just a contest between two football teams; it represents the fierce competitive spirit of the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy. Yet, it is also a powerful symbol of unity. No matter the outcome on the scoreboard, these young men and women are united in their commitment to serve and defend the same nation, exemplifying a level of camaraderie and respect that defines true leadership.
The uniforms worn in today’s game highlight the deep connection between these institutions and the military history they honor. Army’s uniform pays tribute to the 6th Armored Division, known as the “Super Sixth,” which played a pivotal role in World War II, particularly in the Battle of the Bulge. Navy’s uniform commemorates the historic actions of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Battle of Iwo Jima, a moment immortalized by the iconic flag-raising on Mount Suribachi. These uniforms remind us of the sacrifices of those who came before and the legacy that these cadets and midshipmen carry forward.
Here in Costa Rica, I have invited fellow West Point graduates as well as Annapolis graduates to gather and watch this great game together. It is a moment to celebrate not just the rivalry, but the shared values and traditions that unite us across borders.
And so, as the game unfolds, we cheer with passion and pride. Go Army, Beat Navy!
